Can CBD Oil Help Health Care Workers Cope with Covid Stress?

We recently learned about a group of researchers who were looking into whether or not cannabidiol could be effective in helping frontline health care workers cope with the stress and burnout brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of their study were published on the JAMA Network Open a few months ago. 

New Research on CBD Oil and Burnout

In Efficacy and Safety of Cannabidiol Plus Standard Care vs Standard Care Alone for the Treatment of Emotional Exhaustion and Burnout Among Frontline Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic, researchers report on a randomized clinical trial involving 120 frontline health care professionals. The study was designed to look at the question of whether cannabidiol (CBD) therapy could relieve the emotional exhaustion and burnout experienced by frontline health care professionals working with COVID-19 patients. 

“Cannabidiol (CBD) has anxiolytic and antidepressant properties and may be capable of reducing emotional exhaustion and burnout symptoms,” the researchers said going into the study.

The team of researchers, led by José Alexandre S. Crippa, PhD; Antonio W. Zuardi, PhD and Francisco S. Guimarães, PhD; which included Karina Pereira-Lima, who divides her time between the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor (Go Wolverines!) and at Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, concluded that: “CBD therapy reduced symptoms of burnout and emotional exhaustion among health care professionals working with patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The researchers say that double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm their findings and caution that a handful of study participants experienced undesired or adverse effects from the cannabidiol, but their preliminary findings are very exciting.
